MADGE - Mothers Are Demystifying Genetic Engineering

MADGE has had a slight name change from "Mothers Against Genetic Engineering" to “Mothers Are Demystifying Genetic Engineering”. We are not against clever and thoughtful uses of genetic science and learning more about genetics. We just do not want untested and unlabelled GM crops in our fields or GM food on our plates.

Daylesford GM Presentation

Attend a presentation by MADGE to ‘demystify’ GM food and crops.
Friday 29th August - Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre - 12. 00 - 1.00pm, followed by chat and nibbles

For an entertaining and informative look at Genetically Modified (Genetically Engineered) food and crops, watch a presentation from MADGE members dedicated to understanding GM and avoiding GM food products in our diets.

Why take the risk of GM Canola?

MADGE is calling for the Federal Government to halt planting of GM canola until independent feeding trials are done.

GM canola will be grown in 2008 in Victoria and NSW unless the Federal Government intervenes.

Consumers are right to be cautious about GM food as there are no long term, peer reviewed, multigenerational feeding trials to show whether or not it is safe to eat.

Rats breed every 21 days and so it would only take six months to show the effects of GM canola on eight generations of rats. If Genetech companies were sincere in persuading the public that GM food is safe they could have done hundreds of feeding tests already.

That these trials have not been done suggests one of two things:

  • The Genetech industry cares so little for public opinion that they have not released GM crop samples to be tested by independent scientists
  • That the Genetech companies are afraid of what independent tests would show

MADGE is now calling for the Federal Government to halt the planting of GM canola in Australia and do the following:

  • Conduct independent, peer reviewed, multigenerational feeding trials to show whether or not GM canola is safe to eat.
  • Have full labeling of all GM ingredients and processes and ensure this is effectively monitored and enforced
  • Ensure widespread community consultation including a full, fair and open discussion of GM crops and the alternatives to them
