The premium for non-genetically modified canola looks set to continue at least into next season. Tom Puddy, from Western Australia's largest grain handler, CBH, says European demand for 'sustainable' canola means the non-GM price is likely to remain $30-$40 higher than that of GM canola.

NOTE: There's a report out from Rick Roush of Melbourne University claiming Australian canola (oilseed rape) yields are in decline because farmers there haven't been able to grow GM canola. However, as Kim Chance, Western Australia's Ag Minister, has noted, this yield decline claim conveniently ignores climatic conditions in recent years when Australia has experienced some of the worst droughts in its history.

A fourth generation wheat farmer from Canada is taking his concerns about genetically modified wheat on the road. Matt Gehl is a speaker with the Canadian National Farmers Union tour in Australia. He's raising questions about the ability of his generation of farmers to have a voice in the future of agriculture - a voice that he says is being marginalised as a consequence of increasing corporate control over agricultural research and policy.
